Coming from a family where almost everyone is a doctor, accounting probably wasn’t the most obvious career choice for me. No one in my family even knew what ACCA was at the time.
I chose it because I was genuinely curious about how businesses work, how they operate, make financial decisions and ultimately, what makes a business successful. That curiosity drew me towards accounting, and almost five years after starting my ACCA studies, I’m now a qualified ACCA member and still enjoy learning how businesses operate.
How do you approach working with a new client and learning about their business?

I don’t look at a client as simply a set of accounts or a list of transactions. Before looking at the numbers, I prefer understanding the business - what it actually does, how it makes money, what its main costs are and how things operate day-to-day.
I also think it’s imperative to understand a client’s expectations from the very beginning, since every client is different and what one business owner considers a priority may be completely different for another.
Once I understand the bigger picture, the numbers start to make a lot more sense, and it means that when we provide advice, we’re not just giving a textbook answer - we’re giving advice that’s actually relevant to that particular business.
What can clients expect from you as their Client Manager?

Clear and precise communication is key for me. Accounting and tax can be confusing, so I always try to explain things in a way that is easy to understand and relevant to the client, without unnecessary jargon.
If a client has a question, I want them to feel comfortable asking it, and I’ll always do my best to give them a clear answer and get back to them as quickly as possible.
Our team takes a lot of pride in being responsive, and that’s something I want my clients to experience too - I want them to know they can reach out to me whenever they need help and I’ll do my best to assist them.
What accounting or tax issue do you most often help clients understand?

More recently, MTD has also been a big area of confusion, with many business owners unsure about what the new requirements mean for them and when they actually apply. We also regularly deal with questions around capital allowances and tax residency, particularly where a client’s circumstances are a little more complicated.
I enjoy these conversations because they give me the opportunity to take something that can seem quite complicated and break it down into something the client can actually understand and rely on.
What is the most important piece of advice you would give to someone running a small business?

There are two things I’d really want a small business owner to understand.
First, understand what your financial numbers are actually telling you - you can have an excellent business, plenty of sales and a great product, but still run into problems if you don’t understand your cash flow. Profit and cash in the bank aren’t always the same thing, and knowing this distinction can transform the way you manage your business.
Second, don’t leave your finances until the end of the year - your accounts shouldn’t just be something you think about when your accountant asks for them, they can tell you a lot about how your business is performing and where you might need to make changes.
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working with clients?
Outside of work, I love spending time with family and friends. I’m also a massive football fan and a fiercely loyal Manchester United supporter, despite the rollercoaster since Sir Alex…
Outside of work, I love spending time with family and friends. I’m also a massive football fan and a fiercely loyal Manchester United supporter, despite the rollercoaster since Sir Alex Ferguson left - you can catch me watching every single game day, still holding onto the belief shared by fans everywhere that things will turn around soon.
