When I start working with a new client, I first focus on understanding their business, how it operates and what is important to them. I always try to put myself in the client’s shoes and think as if I were running the business myself.
This helps me understand their priorities, challenges and expectations rather than just looking at the numbers from an accounting perspective. I also make sure I communicate with the client and ask the right questions so I can build a clear picture of their business.
By taking this approach, I am able to build a close relationship with the client and develop a better understanding of their business, which ultimately allows me to provide more practical and relevant advice.

I always try to understand the client’s situation from a practical business perspective rather than simply applying textbook knowledge. Every client and every business is different, so I believe the advice should be practical, relevant and tailored to their individual circumstances.
Most importantly, I want my clients to feel that they can rely on me not just for completing their accounts and tax work, but also when they need someone to discuss a problem with or help them make a business decision.
What accounting or tax issue do you most often help clients understand?

My biggest piece of advice would be keeping clear records from day one and understanding your own numbers. Don’t just focus on your sales - keep an eye on cashflow, costs and tax liabilities. As the saying goes, ‘If you can’t measure it, you can’t improve it.’ Good financial records help you understand where your business is and make better decisions.
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working with clients?
