I wanted to challenge myself by choosing something different rather than following the more traditional paths like engineering, medicine or law. I carried out Google research on the best careers in the world and accounting appealed to me.
Over time, I found that I genuinely enjoyed the challenge and the practical side of helping businesses with their accounting matters.
How do you approach working with a new client and learning about their business?

I start by understanding the client’s business, how they earn income and what their main expenses are. I try to understand the business from their perspective by putting myself in their position.
Once I understand the business, it becomes much easier to identify issues and introduce process improvements alongside practical advice. Communication plays a key role in establishing a close working relationship with my clients.

As a Client Manager, clients can expect me to be approachable, responsive and honest in my communication. My clients expect explanations in plain English rather than accounting terminology. I do not believe in simply completing accounts and sending them over, I want clients to understand what their numbers mean and what they need to do next. When clients understand their numbers, they build trust that the accountant knows what they are doing. I also try to stay proactive so I can identify and deal with issues before they become bigger problems.

I deal with various accounting and tax issues for multiple clients. One of the most common issues I help clients with is understanding the difference between turnover, profit, tax and the money they can actually take from their business. These concepts can become confusing, especially when salary, dividends, expenses and director’s loans are involved. My approach is to keep the explanation practical and in plain English, rather than making it more complicated than it needs to be.
What is the most important piece of advice you would give to someone running a small business?

I would advise keeping proper financial records from day one and not leaving your accounts until the last minute. Your accounts should be a tool for running the business, not just something you prepare because HMRC or Companies House requires it. Understanding your cash flow and numbers regularly can prevent many unpleasant surprises later.
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working with clients?
I enjoy travelling, exploring new places and taking a break from the usual routine. I especially like travelling on my bike, which involves adventure, speed and getting out into nature…
I enjoy travelling, exploring new places and taking a break from the usual routine. I especially like travelling on my bike, which involves adventure, speed and getting out into nature and long roads rather than just visiting the usual tourist spots. I also enjoy playing games, which is usually the best way to properly switch off from work.
